The development of bass guitar pedagogy and Ed Friedland’s methodology in the textbook Hal Leonard Bass Method – Complete Edition, Milwaukee: Hal Leonard, 2004, 144 pgs., ISBN: 9780793563838

Abstract:

In the approximately 70 years that have passed since the birth of the bass guitar, a number of different specifically bass guitar playing techniques and idioms have been developed. Bass guitar pedagogy has also undergone decades of development, which has naturally established itself on modern digital platforms in the 21st century. Hal Leonar Bass Method – Complete Edition is a collection of three bass guitar textbooks by American author Ed Friedland. The series of textbooks offers a high-quality, sophisticated and holistically designed teaching system, especially for beginners. Through etudes and understandable accompanying commentary, they will become familiar with the notes on the bass guitar fretboard, with the correct holding and playing technique (pizzicato, plucking, slap), as well as with various ways of independently creating a bass guitar part according to chord marks through the use of various rhythms and tonal material. The textbook also includes access to accompanying recordings, thanks to which the student can compare his playing with a model performance and at the same time practice his own performances in the context of the sound of the band with other harmonic, melodic and rhythmic instruments.
