Tradition and Innovation in Iranian Traditional Music and the Work of Roozbeh Nafisi

Abstract:

The paper aims to introduce the Iranian musical tradition to the Slovak musicological community, using the work of musician Roozbeh Nafisi as an example of its contemporary development. Iranian traditional music, based on the dastgah system and the radif repertoire, is currently undergoing transformations under the influence of globalization, migration, and new artistic approaches. Nafisi reflects these influences and connects them with traditional elements through several innovative approaches, among which is his original concept bee-gaah. The paper analyzes his music, the author uses semi-structured interviews and relevant literature, and emphasizes how the tradition can be perceived as an open and evolving system. In Nafisi’s work, music becomes a means of personal and cultural expression as well as a space for creative dialogue between different musical worlds.
